Trevor Nielsen

Hi, I’m Trevor.

I started my design career making $150 logos and taking whatever freelance work I could find. It took forever, and I burned through my savings doing it. In 2016 I landed my first real product design role at a SaaS company, and I began publishing consistently: writing about what I was learning, showing my work, talking about design in plain language.

That’s when I learned the real leverage wasn’t just skill. It was being discoverable.

I went on to work across startups and larger companies. Then, in August 2023, I was laid off. This time I wasn’t panicked, because opportunities were already there. I had spent years sharing openly and putting my work where the right people could find it. Within four weeks of posting honestly about my work on LinkedIn, inbound leads showed up. Within six months I had signed seven clients, every one of them inbound. That freelance practice replaced my full-time income.

These days I freelance with clients I like working with, and I’ve helped grow products like Kleo to over 70,000 users. Discoverable Designer is where I share the system: one edition every week on writing, visibility, and building a design career where opportunities come to you.

Follow along, one edition a week.
